'Baduli' that literally means 'hiccup', is a word that is typically used in Uttarakhand folklore when you attribute the occurance of a hiccup to a loved one or a relative thinking of you. Incidentlly, for uttarakhandies based out of uttarakhand and our home country, India, this has come to have a bigger meaning in our lives as we indulge from time to time in fond reminiscences of out homeland and its people, reagardless of occasional hiccup.

Uttarakhand is a State of India which is situated in the part of northern India just west of Nepal and on the Tibet border. Uttaranchal became the 27th state of the Republic of India on the 9th of November 2000. The name of the state was officially changed from Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand in January 2007. We will explore more about Uttaranchal Culture (Food and Dining, Fair and Festivals, Music and Folk Dance, Art and Craft etc) later. The population of Uttarakhand state is 10,086,292. The density of Uttarakhand is 189 per sq. km. Uttarakhand State is spread over 53,483 Sq Km. Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand and is located in the Garhwal region.The Honorable High Court of Uttarakhand state is situated in District Nainital. Uttarakhand is a place with great diversity of the region where snow-clad mountains, green hills, fertile valleys, flowing rivers and thriving lakes add to the natural beauty.

Uttarakhand’s languages, religions, dance, music, architecture, food, and customs develop a great and versatile culture which is influenced from the indigenous population as well as from the immigrants to this beautiful state. In the whole state there are very strong cultural impact of Kumaon and Garhwal regions

Uttarakhand has a significant impact in ancient history as Land of Gods and source of the Ganges River. Its peaks and valleys were well known in ancient times. The Pauravas, Kushanas, Kunindas, Guptas, Katyuris, Palas, the Chands, and Parmars or Panwars and the British have ruled Uttarakhand in turns. The present state of Uttarakhand was earlier a part of the United Province of Agra and Awadh, which came into existence in 1902. In 1935, the name of the state was shortened to the United Province. In January 1950, the United Province was renamed, as Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal remained a part of Uttar Pradesh before it came into being on 9 November 2000, the 27th state of India. In January 2007 Uttaranchal was renamed officially as Uttarakand.
